چکیده

The contributions in this theme issue of Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A address important global trends in energy management, both current and anticipated. Particularly in the context of electrical power systems, these trends will present complex scientific challenges in decision analysis and optimization, in the analysis and assessment of risk and in the modelling of flexibility, and will raise numerous computational issues. The articles herein aim to suggest new ways in which engineering and mathematics can combine to address them. Significant challenges arise from the increasing connection of variable renewable energy generation. Despite their long-term benefits in terms of sustainability, renewable resources such as solar and wind power are both highly variable and partially unpredictable. They, therefore, present operational challenges in assessing and mitigating risk, including issues of imbalance between generation and demand and network constraints. Additionally, there is longer term uncertainty over the technology costs and environmental policies associated with renewable generation, among other factors. These uncertainties at various time scales may imply the need for significant investment in new, more flexible ‘smart grid’ technologies capable of adaptation to a range of future scenarios. As laid out in [1], examples are

Optimization of Operation of Microgrid by Thermal Demand Response Considering Enhancement of Consumers’ Thermal Comfort

In recent years, multi-energy microgrids including electricity, gas and thermal are more grown; that presents demand response (DR) models considering multi-energy storages and renewable resources. Appropriate DR management with storages may lead to optimal flexibility. In this paper, a probabilistic linear model is introduced to assess the effect of flexibility and DR. In the proposed model, el...

Surrogate Model of Multi-Period Flexibility from a Home Energy Management System

Near-future electric distribution grids operation will have to rely on demand-side flexibility, both by implementation of demand response strategies and by taking advantage of the intelligent management of increasingly common small-scale energy storage. Home energy management systems (HEMS) will play a crucial role on the flexibility provision to both system operators and market players like ag...

EFFICIENCY EVALUATION OF PROPOSED OBJECTIVE FUNCTIONS IN STRUCTURAL DAMAGE DETECTION BASED ON MODAL STRAIN ENERGY AND FLEXIBILITY APPROACHES

Civil infrastructures such as bridges and buildings are prone to damage as a result of natural disasters. To understand damages induced by these events, the structure needs to be monitored. The field of engineering focusing on the process of evaluating the location and the intensity of the damage to the structure is called Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). Early damage prognosis in structures...

Convex risk measures for portfolio optimization and concepts of flexibility

Due to their axiomatic foundation and their favorable computational properties convex risk measures are becoming a powerful tool in financial risk management. In this paper we will review the fundamental structural concepts of convex risk measures within the framework of convex analysis. Then we will exploit it for deriving strong duality relations in a generic portfolio optimization context. I...

Structural Damage Assessment Via Model Updating Using Augmented Grey Wolf Optimization Algorithm (AGWO)

Some civil engineering-based infrastructures are planned for the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system based on their importance. Identifiction and detecting damage automatically at the right time are one of the major objectives this system faces. One of the methods to meet this objective is model updating whit use of optimization algorithms in structures. This paper is aimed to evaluate the...
